➢ Cognitive approach acts as a bridge between dynamic approach and
behavioural approach. Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) trains individual
to be more aware of how their thoughts and feelings affect their behaviour.
The ABC model developed by Albert Ellis is a technique used in CBT, a form of
psychotherapy that helps individual positively shape their thoughts and
feelings.
➢ A refers to Activating events
(Mr A & Mr B are friends and colleagues. Mr B didn’t greet Mr A in the
morning walk)
➢ B refers to Belief System
(Mr A’s belief system says that Mr B dislikes him and not greeting him)
➢ C refers to Consequences
(Emotional consequence – Mr A is depressed, Behavioural consequence – Mr
A stopped greeting Mr B even in office)
➢ In this situation, a cognitive counsellor, enables/motivatesthe client to work
on how to understand this situation from different perspectives. Mr A finally
understands that Mr B hasn’t noticed him in the morning at all. The
counsellor involves Mr A in understanding the situation from different
perspective and enables him to find a solution. Mr A accepts and internalises
the situation through the process of counselling.
➢ Inner motivation stays for a longer period.
1. Persistence in the face of adversity. 3P’s – patience, persistence,
perseverance.
2. Futuristic thinking
3. Innovative thinking
4. Be on the move and keep learning
5. Happiness is a choice and pleasure is not a destination
➢ Motivation doesn’t happen with simple words; it happens when the person’s
situation is attended to and resolved.
➢ Be workful, share your thoughts and feelings, have creative activity, adapt
this lifestyle to be calm, cool and relaxed. Only a cool and relaxed mind can
receive and respond.
➢ Anything which requires change causes stress. The counsellor cannot expect
immediate change in the situation of the client. It is necessary to stay firm
with steady wisdom irrespective of the changes in client. This steadiness can
break the resistance.
➢ Transference is must, otherwise the counsellor is ineffective. Transference
has to be used as a vehicle for psycho therapeutic process. Transference
should be limited and should not lead to dependency. If there is countertransference, then the counsellor should realise and refer the client to
another counsellor.
➢ Cognitive therapy is applicable to those who are able to think about thinking.
Therapy is applicable based on the client. A counsellor has to individually
tailor one’s approach as per the suitable condition of the client.
